Reading is at the forefront of our daily activities in our house. My kids love to read, and it’s not just because I am an English teacher. We have always made reading fun, whether that be reading in different voices, acting out stories, making connections with our books, etc. Our house is exploding with books, but my motto is “you can never have too many books”! Here’s a list of our family favorites when it comes to children’s books for kids under 5:
- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: My son especially loves this book, and we love singing the alphabet after reading it!
- Little Owl’s Night: We have read this one so many times I could recite it in my sleep (and have on multiple nights)!
- Goodnight Moon: You have to have this classic on your bookshelf. My kids love this as part of their bedtime book routine.
- Little Blue Truck: This was a favorite for my son. We always had fun making the animal noises.
- Giraffes Can’t Dance: Not only does this book have an easy-to-read rhyme, but it’s got a great message that any parent would approve of!
- The Little Red Caboose: This is an oldie but a goodie. My son made us read this book to him multiple times a day during his first two years!
- The Story of Rock: Okay, so this one is not a classic. My brother-who is very into music-got my son this book for his 1st birthday. It gives a glimpse of famous bands throughout history, anyone from Jimmy Hendrix to The White Stripes. Both my kids love this one and we still read this at night!
- Llama Llama books: Really, any of the Llama Llama books are great! We have a lot of them but don’t prefer one over the other. They are great, easy-to-read books for kids!
- I Love You Through and Through: This book is another classic. We love to act this one out. For example, “I love your silly side”, and we make funny faces, etc. There are lots of laughs with this one.
- Eric Carle books: Eric Carle is a favorite author in our house, and there is a reason he is considered one of the greatest children’s authors of all time. I couldn’t pick just one Eric Carle book for this list, but my kids love The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?, and Polar Bear Polar Bear What Do You Hear? You’ve got to have Eric Carle books on your kid’s bookshelf.
Of course, there are millions of kids books out there for you to choose for your littles. What are some of your family favorites?
