I’m always looking for ways I can entertain my kids at home. My son is really into art (painting, drawing, building), so I thought he would love making slime! I found what I thought was a good recipe for traditional slime…and it did not go well. Little did I know just how much my son absolutely hates to have things stuck to his fingers or hands in any way. The kid literally had a meltdown when the slime got stuck to his hands! Big Mom fail!
I started exploring ways to get the idea of slime without the mess. I found it! The perfect mess-free slime recipe that has the consistency of slime without the stickiness. I’m not even kidding when I tell you that my kids played for two and a half hours with this stuff! They started by molding it into different things, then brought out their “guys” (plastic figurines) and played with their figures in the slime. I think at one point they even had dinosaurs and truck out on there. It was a huge win! So let me share what I did.
I used simple at-home products: Elmer’s glue, Barbasol shaving cream, food coloring, and contact solution.
1. First add the Elmers glue to a bowl. I used about 1/2 cup for two toddlers, but you may choose to make it a full cup if making for more kids.
2. Next add your food coloring of choice. A few drops will do it depending on your desired shade.
3. Once the food coloring is completely mixed in, add a cup and a half of Barbasol shaving cream. Mix it together with a spatula.
4. Finally, add in the contact solution. I started with about two tablespoons, but it was still too sticky for my kids, so I just kept adding squirts of contact solution until I got to my desired consistency.
At this point, start using your hands to mix it all together so you can test the waters of how sticky it is.
Voila! Completely sticky-free slime that provides endless entertainment! The best news-it lasts a couple of days. Whenever the kids are done with it, put it inside a large Ziploc bag and seal it tightly-no air. The next day when they play with it, it may need a touch more contact solution and it’ll be ready to go!
I put parchment paper down and used painter’s tape to hold it so they had a clean surface to use. One that didn’t mess up my table!
