Like any busy mom of three, I try to do some real deep cleaning during the summer months. I’ll be honest, during the school year it is tough for me to really deep clean unless it’s over Christmas Break. As I was cleaning the master bathroom I noticed-gasp!– mold in the shower 🤢.
I know it sounds so foul, and I was appalled when I found it, but after research I found out that mold is actually incredibly common in every house-typically the bathrooms and kitchen. Don’t be alarmed if you find some in one of those places because I have found a secret weapon to help combat this most unwelcome visitor.
Enter-lemons.
Yes, lemons. Old fashioned, buy from the grocery store, citrus-smelling lemons. This is nothing new in the world of cleaning; however, I had no idea the power a lemon can punch in one use, and I had to share with my fellow moms.
I tried lots of chemical cleaners to get rid of the mold-Clorox, Tilex, some insane cleaner you need rubber gloves and a mask for, but the one thing that worked the best of all of them was lemons. It’s perfect because in a home with small kids I despise the overpowering smell of Clorox and chemicals in my deep cleans, but using lemons is all-natural and smells so good when I’m done!
The best thing to do when cleaning with lemon is cut them once (I like to cut them in half so I get plenty of the juice out in cleaning). Then you take one half of the lemon and literally use it as a sponge; I scrubbed with that lemon until it was down to the peel! Let it sit for anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, then rinse. That’s it!
It worked the best when tackling the mold, and I learned that lemon is actually specifically a mold-killer, so it’s a perfect cleaner to use in the bathrooms and kitchens. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t ditch my old bathroom cleaners and started using lemons for every bathroom in my house! I love cleaning the kids bathroom and knowing it’s all-natural in there even if some of it didn’t rinse away completely. I won’t ever find residue of chemicals or anything like that. That’s something that makes this Mama’s heart happy!
We buy lemons in bulk and use them not only for cooking, but cleaning too! Who knew?! Go get some lemons, today!
